Band Course Descriptions

Music ensemble classes at Fort Collins High School are a yearlong commitment. When you register for one of these classes, your teacher plans the year’s curriculum based on your participation.  Ensemble music is a team activity, and the full commitment of every member is vital to the success of the entire team.  Therefore, if you register for an ensemble, you are committing to participate for the entire year.

All students enrolling in Band must sign up for both a Primary Ensemble and an Auxiliary Ensemble(s). Please note that several auxiliary ensembles require an audition prior to enrollment.

Primary Ensemble Descriptions: 

  • Intermediate Band- No Audition Required
  • Concert Band – Membership by audition or satisfactory Completion of Intermediate Band
  • Symphonic Band- Membership by audition only

 

2802 | Intermediate Band: 10 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – no prerequisite or audition, 

Available to all 9th grade students with previous band experience and open to all 10th -12th grade students who have not yet reached the proficiency level required for a select band. At FCHS: Members of Intermediate Band must also enroll in at least one Auxiliary Ensemble. Students will need to furnish their performance outfit. This group performs one concert each quarter and performs at a band festival in the spring semester. ​

**ALL students new to FCHS must sign up for Intermediate Band at the time of registration. After auditions have been completed students will be placed in the correct primary ensemble.

 

2800 | Concert Band: 10 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – prerequisite: audition or completion of Intermediate Band, 

Instructor approval is required. Available to all 10th-grade students with previous band experience and 11th- and 12th-grade students who have not reached the proficiency level required for the Select Concert Band.  At FCHS: Participation is by audition or instructor approval. Concert Band is one of our select bands and prepares students for membership in Symphonic Band. This class is for intermediate and advanced students. Members of Concert Band must also enroll in at least one Auxiliary Ensemble. Students will need to furnish their performance outfit. This group performs one concert each quarter, the Colorado Bandmaster Association Regional Concert Band Festival in March, and at the FCHS graduation ceremony at the end of the year. Members also audition for either the Northern Colorado Honor Band or CSU Honor Band.

 

2790 | Select Concert Band (Symphonic Band): 10 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – prerequisite: audition   **FRCC Concurrent Enrollment Credit is available for grades 11 & 12.​ 

           **FRCC MUS 151/152 - Ensemble 1/2 - grade 11 - 2 college credits
           **FRCC MUS 251/252 - Ensemble 1/2 - grade 12 - 2 college credits

Participation is by audition or instructor approval. Membership in this band provides the highest level instruction available to the High school student with previous band experience. At FCHS: Members of Symphonic Band must also enroll in at least one Auxiliary Ensemble.  Students will need to furnish their performance outfit. This group performs one concert each quarter, the Rocky Mountain Concert Band Festival in November, the Colorado Bandmaster Association Regional Concert Band Festival in March, the CBA State Concert Band Festival in April, and at the FCHS graduation ceremony at the end of the year. Members also audition for either the Northern Colorado Honor Band, CSU Honor Band, All-State Band, or All-State Orchestra. ​

 

Auxiliary Ensemble Descriptions: 

  • Pep Band- No audition required.  
  • Jazz Band – Membership by audition only. Instrumentation is limited to traditional jazz instruments. Previous jazz experience is highly recommended. Meets during the school day.
  • Small Instrumental  Ensembles “Tower Winds” – Membership is by audition only. Meets at arranged times outside of the school day.
  • Music Theater Production - Membership is by audition only. Meets at arranged times outside of the school day.

 

2820 | Pep Band: 6 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – no prerequisite, Fee $45

No audition is required for this Auxiliary Ensemble and it is open for students in grades 9-12. Pep Band meets from 8:00-8:55am on Monday mornings during the fall semester and the third quarter. The group performs in the stands at all home football games, select volleyball games, wrestling meets and boys/girls basketball games. There are two-hour rehearsals and sectionals each day from August 3rd-7th, 2020 to prepare for our first week school performances. A full performance schedule is made available during the summer on the band website. Students may waive 2.5 wellness credits one time during their 4 years at the secondary level by taking pep band. As a non-auditioned group a majority of our students select Pep Band as their Auxiliary Ensemble.

 

2830 | Select Stage Band (Jazz Band): 10 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – prerequisite: audition, 

 Membership by audition only. Jazz Band is available to students wishing to increase their knowledge and abilities in the musical styles of swing, blues, rock, Latin, funk, and other popular music styles. Students must be a member of a primary ensemble or show proficiency on the piano, bass, guitar or other appropriate stage band instruments (saxophone, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums and vibraphone). It is open for students in grades 9-12 with previous jazz experience by audition or instructor approval. Previous jazz experience is highly recommended. Meets during the school day.

 

2890 | Small Instrument Ensembles (Tower-Winds - Band): Variable credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – prerequisite: audition

Small Instrumental Ensembles– Membership is by audition only. This Auxiliary Ensemble consists of the following select groups at FCHS: a brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba), a woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn), and a Dixieland Jazz Band. There is also a Jazz Combo that is open to those with previous instrumental music experience who have never played jazz music before and are interested in learning. Meeting times for each group is arranged. Tower Winds is open for students in grades 9-12 by audition only.

 

5237 | Music Theater Production : Variable credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Fine & Applied Arts – prerequisite: audition

This one semester class is an interdisciplinary course designed to develop skills in various aspects of producing a major musical. Instructor approval required. At FCHS: Students that have been selected for the pit orchestra should register for this class.​
