State and district standards, as well as the need for a broad-based Physical Education experience developing all eleven components of physical fitness, requires that the students become proficient in a wide variety of activities.

Students are strongly encouraged to take their Physical Education courses throughout their four years of high school. Waiting until the senior year to take all of the requirements is not only poor health practice, but poor schedule planning.

 

3205 | Lifetime Physical Education: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness - no prerequisite - Level 1

Lifetime Physical Education provides students with the knowledge, experience, and opportunities to participate in individual/dual sports, team sports, lifetime and recreational sports, and fitness-based activities. Lifetime Physical Education emphasizes moving, participating, being fit, playing fairly and valuing physical activity.

 

3026 | Health and Wellness: 5 credits  – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Health & Wellness – no prerequisite - Level 1

Wellness is defined as the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.  This class teaches student how to pursue an active lifestyle along with making positive health choices.  Topics of study include those aspects of wellness reflected in the Colorado Academic Standards for Physical Activity and Comprehensive Health including physical activity; healthy eating; sexual health; health promotion; emotional and social wellness; alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention; violence-free relationships; and safety. 

 

3010 | Beginning Weight Training: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness - no prerequisite - Level 1

This class is designed to improve muscular strength and endurance. It is designed to be a basic weight training class, not a body-building class. The students will be introduced to a variety of weight training techniques, methods, and principles. Students will learn the terminology, anatomy, and physiology necessary to understand the basic principles behind weight training. Emphasis will be on proper lifting technique, spotting technique and safety throughout the class. Students will learn to use the available machines, as well as free weights. At FCHS: a cardiovascular component will be included in the class instruction.

 

3012 | Advanced Weight Training: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – prerequisite: Beginning Weights

This course is open to students who have successfully completed a beginning weight training course at this high school.  Students will review the techniques  methods and principles presented in the beginning course.  Additional training methods will be introduced and practiced.

 

9617CEFRHS | FRCC Weight Training I (PED1002): 5 credits/1 college credits – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – prerequisite: Beginning Weights

PED 1002: Offers basic instruction and practice in weight training.  Students utilize weight training equipment in accordance to their abilities and goals. Emphasizes weight training equipment orientation, correct lifting techniques, and basic program design for men and women.  

 

9650CEFRHS | FRCC Weight Training II (PED1003): 5 credits/2 college credits – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – prerequisite: PED1002

PED 1003: Offers guided instruction and independent practice in weight training for men and women.  Students practice various weight training techniques in accordance with their abilities.  Emphasizes physiological considerations, equipment orientation, correct lifting techniques, program design, and nutrition. 

 

3066  | Athletic Weights Conditioning: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – prerequisite: Teacher Approval - Repeatable

This class will provide the opportunity to explore the benefits of physical activities such as weight lifting, aerobics, wall climbing, traversing, walk/run, and rollerblading. An appreciation of physical fitness and wellness, which includes muscle strength, cardio-respiratory endurance and flexibility, and encourages a positive attitude toward exercise. At FCHS: Students can select the specific quarter they want to register for. 

 

3066Z | Zero Hour Athletic Weights Conditioning: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness- prerequisite: Teacher Approval - Repeatable

3077 | Team Sports: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness- prerequisite: Level 1 course - Repeatable

The students will be introduced to the basic skills  strategies and formations needed to play a variety of team sports. Skills will be developed through drill and game situations. Rules  terminology and safety precautions will be presented. Cooperation and the elements of effective teamwork will be stressed in all situations.

 

3063 | Individual Sports: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness & Physical Education – prerequisite: Level 1 course - Repeatable

Students will be exposed to a variety of activities  which may include skill development and participation in bowling  tennis  pickle ball  table tennis  badminton and golf.  This course will emphasize the enjoyment of sports and the need for continued involvement in a lifetime of fitness.

 

3092CEFRHS | FRCC Volleyball I (PED2030): 5 credits/1 college credit – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness  - prerequisite: Level 1 course

PED 2030: Introduces and improves student skill level in volleyball.  The primary emphasis is on teaching the student the elements of volleyball including  rules, offensive and defensive play, passing, serving, setting, attacking, team play and game strategies.

 

3006 | Yoga and Fitness: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness - no prerequisite - Level 1

Yoga will be the emphasis in this course. This course will offer students a chance to explore the connection between mind and body and to use this understanding as a basis for a lifelong commitment to wellness. The course is designed to give students an introduction to Yoga as a means of physical and emotional wellness. This course will also include a variety of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercises to address all of the health-related fitness components. In addition, Mindfulness practices will also be taught.

 

9645 | Advanced Yoga & Fitness: 5 credits-grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Wellness -  prerequisite; Yoga & Fitness

Introduces the history and philosophy of yoga, fundamental principles of alignment, breath work, and meditation through guided practice.  Course focuses on demonstrating safety and stability within each pose.

 

9645CEFRHS | FRCC Yoga I (PED1043): 5 credits/1 college credit – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness  - prerequisite: Yoga & Fitness

9651CEFRHS | FRCC Yoga II (PED1044): 5 credits/1 college credit – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness  - prerequisite: PED1043

PED 1044: Builds on the concepts of basic yoga.  This course emphasizes cultivating discernment, awareness, self-regulation, and higher consciousness in the individual.

 

3600 | Adventure Physical Education: 5 credits – grades 11, 12 – Wellness - prerequisite: Teacher Approval - Repeatable

This class will address intermediate or highly skilled individuals who wish to continue with traditional activities at an advanced level as well as being exposed to new and non-traditional sports. Past examples of classes include wall climbing  mountain bike polo  roller hockey  scuba diving  the ropes course and orienteering.

 

3030 | Sports Medicine: 5 credits – grades 10,11, 12 – Elective – no prerequisite

This course provides an opportunity for the study and application of the components of sports medicine including but not limited to: sports medicine related careers, organizational and administrative considerations, prevention of athletic injuries, recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation and management skills, taping and wrapping techniques, first aid/CPR/AED, emergency procedures, nutrition, sports psychology, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and therapeutic exercises.

 

3032 | Sports Officiating: 5 credits – grades 10, 11, 12 – Elective – no prerequisite

This sports officiating course will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve as a referee, umpire, judge, or other official for a sports contest, emphasizing rule interpretation and the proper mechanics of officiating.

 

3590 | Integrated Physical Education (Unified): 5 credits – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – prerequisite: Level 1 course

This course is designed to allow able-bodied juniors and seniors to become teaching assistants in adapted physical education. They will be assisting physically and mentally disabled students participating in modified physical education activities. These students will be matched up either one to one or in small groups of special need students to work in conjunction with the paraprofessional aide.

 

4041 | Teen Choices: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness - no prerequisite

In this course, you will learn how to make healthy decisions throughout your teen years.  You will learn skills and practices required by individuals to develop, manage and strengthen:  social, psychological, and physical wellness, interpersonal relationships, safe sexual decision making, anti-substance use practices, and understanding teens and the law.

 

3028 | Nutrition & Wellness: 5 credits – grades 9, 10, 11, 12 – Wellness – no prerequisite

The purpose of the course is to develop lifelong, healthy individuals with an understanding and academic knowledge of wellness as a lifestyle, exercise and fitness, nutrition, and consumer products and services. Emphasis is placed on implementing healthy nutritional choices, developing a fitness/wellness plan, integrating science principles as related to nutrition, and practicing wise consumer decisions.

 

7290 | Interpersonal Relationships: 5 credits – grades 10, 11, 12 – Wellness - no prerequisite

The purpose of the course is to acquire academic knowledge and understanding for healthy, respectful, and caring relationships across the life span. Emphasis is placed on family and friend dynamics, effective communication, and healthy interpersonal relationships.
