  10 credits - grade 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective - Prerequisites:   Previous enrollment in AVID lower-level courses for at least three years & Previous or concurrent enrollment in at least one honors  Advance Placement  or    International Baccalaureate course                                                                                      

AVID is an elective course where students will receive instruction on academic study skills such as time management  notetaking  textbook reading  library research  and organization.  These skills will support the students as they pursue a rigorous course of college preparatory study.  Students will also work in tutor led study groups two days per week to focus on specific areas where additional academic instruction is needed.  Students will be taught how to use writing as a tool of learning  reading strategies  collaboration  and inquiry.

 

7027 | Leadership (Link Leaders):  5 credits - grades 10, 11, 12 - Elective - prerequisite: Application

Leadership is an elective course which is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop communication skills and participate in community service projects. At FCHS: Leadership is an elective course specifically for those students selected as LINK Leaders for the  Lambkin Way Class. This course will provide LINK Leaders with the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills by teaching lessons and assisting the Lambkin Way instructors. . Applications are available mid-January.

 

8104 | Student Council: 10 credits - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective - prerequisite: Election

In Student Council  students will learn and practice all areas of leadership. They will become skilled in the art of leadership and work as a team to create positive change and   exciting activities for school. It is expected that students will fulfill a course requirement of numerous extra hours outside of the normal school day working on Council activities

 

8102 | Peer Counseling: 10 credits - grades 11, 12 - Elective - prerequisite: Application only

This class is designed to train and prepare a selected group of students to provide support and resources for their peers. In this class students learn introductory counseling skills  receive information and training in issues that are pertinent to teens. Some examples: grief  loss  drugs  alcohol  teen pregnancy  sexuality  and dating violence. At the completion of their training  peers provide one-on-one support and complete classroom presentations. This class requires an application and interview.

 

8157 | Diversity Leadership: 5 credits - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective - no prerequisite

This course will focus on building leadership skills  promoting diversity within our student body and increasing awareness and acceptance of all populations and backgrounds.  Academic time and support will also be a component of this course. Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to register and apply.

 

9932 | Enrichment: 10 credits - grades 10, 11, 12 - Elective - prerequisite: None

This course provides students with various enrichment activities. AT FCHS, the enrichment seminar class where the student will focus on leadership skills, career and education exploration, and a collaborative skill-based service learning project in an area of interest and impact. This class is required as part of the GT Endorsed Diploma.

 

7282 | AP Seminar:  10 credits - grades 11,12 - Language Arts - no prerequisite

AP Seminar is the first of two year-long courses that comprise the Advanced Placement Capstone program. This foundational course provides students with opportunities to think critically and creatively, research, explore, pose solutions, develop arguments, collaborate, and communicate using various media. Students explore real-world issues through a variety of lenses and consider multiple points of view to develop deep understanding of complex issues as they make connections between these issues and their own lives. Students read articles, research studies, and foundational and philosophical texts; listen to and view speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experience artistic and literary works to gain a rich appreciation and understanding of issues. Themes like education, innovation, revolution, sustainability, and technology are selected and allow for deep exploration based on student interests, local and civic issues, global or international topics, and concepts from other Advanced Placement courses. Students are assessed with two through-course performance tasks and an end-of-course exam. The AP Seminar score is based on all three assessments and is reported on the standard 1-5 AP scoring scale. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both of the AP Capstone courses will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate from the College Board. At FCHS, This class is required as part of the GT Endorsed Diploma.

 

7283 |  AP Research:  10 credits - grade 11, 12 - Elective -  prerequisite: AP Seminar

AP Research is the second of two year-long courses that comprise the Advanced Placement Capstone program.  In this course, students will design, plan, and conduct a yearlong research-based investigation on a topic of individual interest.  Through this inquiry and investigation, students demonstrate the ability to apply scholarly understanding to real-world problems and issues.  Students further the skills acquired the AP Seminar course by understanding research methodology; employing ethical research practices; and accessing analyzing, and synthesizing information to build, present, and defend an argument.  Students are assessed through culminating performance tasks: Academic thesis paper (5,000 words) with a defined structure, Presentation, performance, or exhibition and oral defense of research and presentation.  The AP Research score is based on these components and is reported on the standard 1-5 AP scoring scale.  Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both of the AP Capstone courses will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate from the College Board.  Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research courses and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma from the College Board. At FCHS, This class is required as part of the GT Endorsed Diploma.

 

1412 | Ready, Set, College - College Planning for Seniors: 5 credits - grades 12 - English Language Arts - no prerequisite

This course is designed to support seniors with applying to college. It covers creating a balanced list of colleges, the application process at FCHS, The Common Application, components of a college application, financial aid timelines and factors, college visits, writing a personal essay and managing time and stress. In addition to these topics, independent work time and check-ins will be provided to support the college application process. 

 

1880 | JROTC Leadership Education & Training I: 15 credits per semester - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Social Studies and Wellness credits  - no prerequisite 

The mission of Leadership Education and Training (LET) is to motivate young people to be better citizens. To accomplish this purpose, the text discusses citizenship, leadership, and a number of other courses designed to help the cadets succeed in high school and after graduation. Cadets wear uniforms every day. The LET 1 Level consist of:  Foundations of Army JROTC, Being A Leader, Leadership Skills, Know Yourself-Socrates, Learning to Learn, Study Skills, Communication Skills, and Conflict Resolution.

 

1881 | JROTC Leadership Education & Training II: 15 credits per semester - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Government, World Language/Culture, or Wellness credits - District Capstone  - prerequisite: LET I

The second year of Leadership Education and Training is split into units including: Techniques of Communication, Leadership, Cadet Challenge, Leadership Lab, First Aid, Map Reading, History, Your American Citizenship, Career Opportunities, and Role of the U.S. Army.

 

1882 | JROTC Leadership Education & Training III: 15 credits per semester - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Finance credits  - prerequisite: LET II

The third year of Leadership Education and Training provides additional leadership situations. In this year students will not only be more involved as teachers and leaders within the cadet battalion, but they will also do more independent studies in the areas of communication, leader, first aid, history, map reading, career opportunities, and technology awareness.

 

1884 | JROTC Leadership Education & Training IV: 15 credits per semester - grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective credits  - prerequisite: LET III

The fourth-year Cadets are responsible for the daily Cadet administration and perform as commanders and staff officers. They act as assistant instructors in some subject areas for other JROTC classes.
